  1. Math · Numbers and AlgebraThe values 5/7, 0.72, 71%, and 57/80 are arranged from least to greatest. Which value is in the third position?
    • A. 5/7 (correct)
    • B. 0.72
    • C. 71%
    • D. 57/80

    As decimals the values are 5/7 ≈ 0.7143, 0.72, 71% = 0.71, and 57/80 = 0.7125. The order is 71%, 57/80, 5/7, 0.72, so 5/7 is third.

  2. Math · Measurement and DataAn oral solution contains 250 mg of a drug in each 5 mL. A prescriber orders 0.75 g of the drug. How many milliliters of the solution should be given?

    Answer: 15 mL

    0.75 g = 750 mg, and 750 mg ÷ 250 mg per 5 mL = 3 portions of 5 mL, or 15 mL. Skipping the gram-to-milligram conversion gives a wildly wrong amount.

  3. Math · Numbers and AlgebraIn a laboratory batch, the ratio of contaminated samples to uncontaminated samples is 3:17. If 85 samples are uncontaminated, how many samples are in the batch altogether?
    • A. 15
    • B. 102
    • C. 255
    • D. 100 (correct)

    85 ÷ 17 = 5, so each ratio part is 5 samples. There are 3 × 5 = 15 contaminated samples, and 15 + 85 = 100 total. Choosing 15 only finds the contaminated samples.

  4. Math · Measurement and DataFloor tiles that are each 0.31 m long are laid end to end along a hallway that is 12.2 m long. Which is the best estimate of the number of tiles needed for one row along the hallway?
    • A. 40 (correct)
    • B. 4
    • C. 25
    • D. 400

Round to 12 ÷ 0.3 = 40, and the exact value 12.2 ÷ 0.31 ≈ 39.4 is very close. The estimates 4 and 400 come from misplacing the decimal point.

  5. Math · Numbers and AlgebraA 250 mL IV bag contains 1 g of a drug evenly dissolved in the solution. A pump infuses the solution at 30 mL/hr. How many milligrams of the drug will the patient receive in 2 hours 30 minutes?

    Answer: 300 mg

    The concentration is 1000 mg ÷ 250 mL = 4 mg/mL, and the volume infused is 30 × 2.5 = 75 mL. Then 75 mL × 4 mg/mL = 300 mg.

  6. Math · Measurement and DataA bar graph shows the vaccinations given at a clinic in each quarter: Q1, 150; Q2, 210; Q3, 180; Q4, 240. Which quarter-to-quarter change is the largest percent increase?
    • A. Q3 to Q4
    • B. Q1 to Q2 (correct)
    • C. Q2 to Q3
    • D. Q1 to Q2 and Q3 to Q4 are tied, because both rise by 60 vaccinations

    Q1 to Q2 is 60 ÷ 150 = 40%, while Q3 to Q4 is 60 ÷ 180 ≈ 33%. Both rise by 60, but the same increase is a larger percent of the smaller starting value. Q2 to Q3 is a decrease.

  7. Math · Numbers and AlgebraWhich value lies between −0.62 and −5/8 on the number line?
    • A. −0.615
    • B. −0.6255
    • C. −0.6215 (correct)
    • D. −0.63

Since −5/8 = −0.625, the numbers between are greater than −0.625 and less than −0.62, and −0.6215 is the only one in that range. The value −0.615 is greater than −0.62, so it lies to the right of both numbers.

  8. Math · Measurement and DataA medication vial is labeled 0.4 mg per mL. A prescriber orders 250 mcg every 6 hours. How many milliliters of the medication will the patient receive in 24 hours?
    • A. 0.625 mL
    • B. 1.6 mL
    • C. 2.5 mL (correct)
    • D. 25 mL

    Every 6 hours means 4 doses a day, so 4 × 250 mcg = 1,000 mcg = 1 mg. Then 1 mg ÷ 0.4 mg/mL = 2.5 mL. Choice A is the volume for a single dose only.

  9. Math · Numbers and AlgebraWhich of the following values are greater than 2/3? Select all that apply.
    • A. 0.67 (correct)
    • B. 5/8
    • C. 68% (correct)
    • D. 0.666
    • E. 7/10 (correct)
    • F. 13/20

    2/3 ≈ 0.6667. The values 0.67, 68% (0.68) and 7/10 (0.70) are larger. 5/8 = 0.625, 0.666 and 13/20 = 0.65 are smaller; 0.666 is the closest but still slightly below 2/3.

  10. Math · Measurement and DataThe data set 12, 15, 15, 18, 20, 22, 40 has a median of 18 and a mode of 15. The value 40 is replaced by 400. Which measures of the data set change?
    • A. Mean and range only (correct)
    • B. Mean only
    • C. Mean, median, and range
    • D. Range and mode only

The new largest value raises the sum, so the mean changes, and the range grows from 28 to 388. The middle value (18) and the most frequent value (15) are unchanged. 'Mean only' misses the range change.

  11. Math · Numbers and AlgebraA hospital's monthly supply cost fell from $4,800 to $4,080. What was the percent decrease?
    • A. 15% (correct)
    • B. 17.6%
    • C. 85%
    • D. 7.2%

The decrease is $720, and 720 ÷ 4,800 = 0.15, or 15%. Dividing by the new cost, 4,080, gives 17.6%, but percent change is measured against the original value.

  12. Math · Measurement and DataA cylindrical drum has a radius of 0.5 m and a height of 1.2 m. Using π ≈ 3.14 and 1 m³ = 1,000 L, how many liters does the drum hold when full?

    Answer: 942 L

    V = πr²h = 3.14 × 0.25 × 1.2 = 0.942 m³, and 0.942 × 1,000 = 942 L.

  13. Math · Numbers and AlgebraA technician pipettes 0.25 mL of reagent into each well of a 96-well plate. A bottle contains 150 mL of reagent. What is the greatest number of complete plates that can be filled from the bottle?
    • A. 4
    • B. 5
    • C. 6 (correct)
    • D. 7

Each plate needs 96 × 0.25 = 24 mL. Then 150 ÷ 24 = 6.25, so 6 complete plates can be filled. Rounding up to 7 would require reagent the bottle does not contain.

  14. Math · Measurement and DataA line of best fit for a scatter plot is y = 96 − 2.5x, where x is the number of months a patient has followed a diet plan (data collected from 0 to 8 months) and y is the patient's weight in kilograms. Which statements are correct? Select all that apply.
    • A. The slope indicates that weight tends to decrease by about 2.5 kg per month. (correct)
    • B. The y-intercept indicates a predicted starting weight of 96 kg. (correct)
    • C. A patient predicted to weigh 81 kg has followed the plan for 6 months. (correct)
    • D. The predicted weight at 4 months is 90 kg.
    • E. The negative slope shows that weight increases as months increase.
    • F. The predicted weight at 8 months is 74 kg.

The slope is −2.5 kg per month, the intercept at x = 0 is 96 kg, and 96 − 2.5(6) = 81 kg. At 4 months the prediction is 86 kg (not 90), and at 8 months it is 76 kg (not 74); a negative slope means weight decreases.

  15. Math · Numbers and AlgebraWhich fraction is equal to 2.5%?
    • A. 1/40 (correct)
    • B. 1/4
    • C. 1/400
    • D. 2/5

2.5% = 2.5/100 = 0.025, which simplifies to 1/40. 1/4 is 25%, so it comes from misplacing the decimal point.

How to approach it

  1. Convert everything to one form before you compute: fractions to decimals, or both units to the same system.
  2. Write the proportion before you cross-multiply; most dosage-style and recipe questions are one proportion.
  3. Estimate first, so you can spot a calculator slip (a decimal in the wrong place is the most common one).
  4. Pace: 57 minutes for 38 questions is about 90 seconds each.
