Math · Measurement and DataA bottle contains 240 mL of liquid medication. A patient takes 2 teaspoons three times a day for 7 days. Using 1 tablespoon = 15 mL and 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons, how many milliliters remain in the bottle after the 7 days?
- A. 105 mL
- B. 210 mL
- C. 30 mL (correct)
- D. 135 mL
1 teaspoon = 15 ÷ 3 = 5 mL, so each dose is 10 mL. Three doses a day for 7 days is 10 × 3 × 7 = 210 mL taken, and 240 − 210 = 30 mL remain. 210 mL is the amount taken, not the amount left.
Math · Measurement and DataFive systolic blood pressure readings have a mean of 125 mmHg. Four of the readings are 118, 126, 122 and 130 mmHg. What is the fifth reading?
Answer: 129 mmHg
The five readings must total 5 × 125 = 625, and the four known readings total 496, so the fifth is 625 − 496 = 129 mmHg.
Math · Measurement and DataA floor plan is a 10 m by 6 m rectangle with a semicircular alcove attached to one of the 6 m sides. The 6 m side is the diameter of the semicircle. Using π = 3.14, what is the total floor area? Round to the nearest hundredth.
Answer: 74.13 m²
The rectangle has area 10 × 6 = 60 m². The semicircle has radius 3 m, so its area is ½ × 3.14 × 3² = 14.13 m². The total is 74.13 m². Using the full circle (28.26 m²) would be a mistake.
Math · Measurement and DataA line of best fit for a scatter plot of weekly study hours (x) and exam score (y) is y = 5.5x + 52. A student who studied 6 hours scored 90. How does the student's actual score compare with the score predicted by the line?
- A. 5 points above the predicted score (correct)
- B. 5 points below the predicted score
- C. 57 points above the predicted score
- D. The same as the predicted score
The predicted score is 5.5(6) + 52 = 85, so the actual score of 90 is 5 points above it. Choice B reverses the direction of the difference.
Math · Measurement and DataA line graph shows the number of occupied beds on a unit at the start of five days: Day 1, 20; Day 2, 30; Day 3, 42; Day 4, 60; Day 5, 66. Between which two consecutive days was the percent increase in occupied beds greatest?
- A. Day 1 to Day 2 (correct)
- B. Day 2 to Day 3
- C. Day 3 to Day 4
- D. Day 4 to Day 5
The percent increases are 10/20 = 50%, 12/30 = 40%, 18/42 ≈ 42.9%, and 6/60 = 10%, so Day 1 to Day 2 is greatest. Day 3 to Day 4 has the largest raw increase (18 beds) but not the largest percent increase.
Math · Measurement and DataA patient weighs 187 pounds. Using 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb, which is the best estimate of the patient's weight in kilograms?
- A. 41 kg
- B. 85 kg (correct)
- C. 165 kg
- D. 411 kg
Dividing by 2.2 gives 187 ÷ 2.2 = 85 kg, and since 2.2 is a little over 2, the answer should be a little under half of 187. Multiplying by 2.2 gives about 411, which is a common reversal error.
Math · Measurement and DataA patient is 5 ft 7 in tall. Using 1 in = 2.54 cm, what is the patient's height to the nearest tenth of a centimeter?
- A. 152.4 cm
- B. 170.2 cm (correct)
- C. 173.7 cm
- D. 160.0 cm
5 ft 7 in = 67 in, and 67 × 2.54 = 170.18, which rounds to 170.2 cm. Treating 5 ft 7 in as 5.7 ft gives 173.7 cm, which is wrong because inches are twelfths of a foot.
Math · Measurement and DataA clinic recorded these daily patient counts: 14, 9, 12, 9, 17, 9, 11. Which statement about the data is true?
- A. The mode is 9 and the median is 12.
- B. The mean is 11 and the range is 8.
- C. The median is 11 and the range is 17.
- D. The mode is 9 and the range is 8. (correct)
In order the values are 9, 9, 9, 11, 12, 14, 17, so the mode is 9, the median is 11, the range is 17 − 9 = 8, and the mean is 81 ÷ 7 ≈ 11.6. Only the last statement has both parts correct; the third has a correct median but the range is wrong.
Math · Measurement and DataA rectangular room measures 10 m by 8 m. A rectangular 4 m by 3 m piece is removed from one corner, leaving an L-shaped floor. What is the perimeter of the L-shaped floor?
- A. 36 m (correct)
- B. 22 m
- C. 50 m
- D. 68 m
Cutting a rectangle out of a corner leaves the perimeter equal to that of the original rectangle: 2(10 + 8) = 36 m. Subtracting the removed piece's perimeter (14 m) to get 22 m is incorrect, because the cut adds new edges as it removes old ones.
Math · Measurement and DataThe points on a scatter plot of x and y fall exactly on a straight line. The points are (1, 9), (2, 7), (3, 5), and (4, 3). Which equation describes the line?
- A. y = 2x + 7
- B. y = −2x + 11 (correct)
- C. y = −2x + 9
- D. y = −x + 10
The y-values drop by 2 each time x rises by 1, so the slope is −2. Substituting (1, 9) gives 9 = −2 + b, so b = 11. y = −2x + 9 has the right slope but gives 7 at x = 1.
